What Should I Major in to Become a Grant Writer?

Greetings friends and newsletter readers!

Unfortunately I have been dealing with a lot over the last few weeks, which is why our festive
news is a few days late ⏰ but don’t worry! It will be worth it!

The year is marching on, and soon I will be trying to remind myself how to make all of my
Thanksgiving sides! Again, if you would like to get a grant application in this calendar year, call
or email us and we will take care of it.

What is your favorite thing about the beginning of the Fall season? I think one of mine has to be pumpkins. Pumpkin carving, decorating with fabric pumpkins, candle pumpkins, pumpkin pie. Love them all.

Sometimes I get asked what a good college major would be for a grant writer. Marketing, Public Policy Studies and English would all be good options!

Marketing provides good processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging
offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

Essentially, Public Policy is a set of laws, guidelines, and actions decided and taken by
governments in order to work in favor of the public. Public policy can dictate things such as:
which laws are passed, where funding goes, and which topics concern the general public. An English Degree is great for:

  • Social media management.
  • Content creation and management for websites.
  • Professional or technical writing for companies.

SPECIAL DAYS THAT YOU MIGHT NEED A GRANT FOR…

FACT

A nonprofit versus a 501(c)3

A nonprofit is an organization created for the benefit of the public and does NOT have to be a
501(c)3.

A 501(c)3 is a nonprofit that has been recognized by the IRS as being tax-exempt.

It has a nationwide designation.

Their records are legally accessible to the public at all times.

They must file a 990 annually.

They are limited in their political and lobbying activities.

ALSO! Few funders want to give their hard earned dollars to nonprofits that do not have
501(c)3 status! Please see my grant opportunity below for an example!

TIP

By law, tax-exempt status is automatically revoked if an organization does not file the required
Form 990-series returns or notices yearly for 3 consecutive years. The automatic revocation
date is historical. It is the organization’s effective date of automatic revocation (the date for the
filing of the third annual Return or notice), but doesn’t necessarily reflect its current tax-exempt
status.

TRICK

Always spell out the need for the grant! Because saying we need funding is never an acceptable
enough answer.
